PENINSULA TONGUE TIE

Aftercare for
Teenagers & Adult

Scheduling is handled through Chompers Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics — we're proud to be part of the same trusted care team.

🧑‍⚕️ Aftercare for Adults Following a Tongue or Lip Tie Release

The aftercare process for adults is similar to that for children and adolescents but includes a few key adjustments to support healing and comfort.

💊 Pain Management

Mild discomfort or soreness is common after the procedure. Over-the-counter pain relievers, such as acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), are usually sufficient. Be sure to follow dosage instructions carefully, and consult your healthcare provider if you have concerns.

🦷 Oral Hygiene

Maintaining excellent oral hygiene is important for healing and preventing infection. Gently rinse with warm saltwater several times a day — especially after meals — to keep the area clean. When brushing your teeth, be cautious around the surgical sites for the first few days. Regular brushing can resume once healing is underway, but remain gentle around the treated areas.

🍲 Diet Modifications

Stick to soft, cool foods for the first few days to avoid irritating the surgical site. Choose options that are easy to chew and swallow, such as:

  • Yogurt

  • Smoothies

  • Mashed potatoes

  • Soup

  • Scrambled eggs

Gradually reintroduce solid foods as tolerated.

🧘 Exercises

We strongly recommend working with a myofunctional therapist. They will teach specific exercises to promote tongue and lip mobility and help prevent reattachment. These may include tongue stretches, lateral movements, and lip mobility exercises. Follow the therapist’s guidance and perform the exercises consistently.

📅 Follow-Up Appointments

We’ll schedule follow-up visits at Peninsula Tongue Tie to assess your healing, monitor the surgical site, and answer any questions you may have. These visits are an important part of ensuring long-term success and comfort.

⚠️ Watch for Complications

Complications are rare, but it’s important to be alert. Contact us right away if you experience:
