🧒 Aftercare for Children and Adolescents
The aftercare process for children and adolescents is similar to that of infants, with a few age-appropriate modifications. Here are some general guidelines to support healing and comfort:
💊 Pain Management
Some soreness or discomfort is normal after the procedure. Over-the-counter pain relievers like acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) can help, as long as they are appropriate for your child’s age. Always follow the recommended dosage, and consult your pediatrician with any concerns.
🦷Oral hygiene:
Maintaining good oral hygiene is crucial to prevent infection. Encourage your child or adolescent to gently rinse their mouth with warm saltwater several times a day, especially after meals. They should also brush their teeth gently, avoiding the surgical site, for the first few days. Afterward, they can resume regular brushing but be cautious around the healing area.
🍲 Dietary Considerations
For the first few days, stick to soft, cool foods to avoid irritating the surgical area. Great options include:
• Yogurt
• Smoothies
• Mashed potatoes
• Scrambled eggs
• Soup
Gradually reintroduce regular foods as tolerated.
🧘 Exercises
To maintain mobility and prevent reattachment, your child may need to perform tongue stretches, lateral movements, or lip mobility exercises. A myofunctional therapist may help guide these exercises and ensure they’re done correctly. Encourage your child to stay consistent with their stretches as recommended.
📅 Follow-Up Care
We’ll schedule follow-up appointments to monitor healing and ensure everything is progressing as expected. During these visits, we’ll assess the surgical site, provide additional guidance, and answer any questions you may have.
⚠️ Watch for Signs of Complications
While complications are rare, please contact us right away if you notice:
• Excessive bleeding
• Persistent or worsening pain
• Signs of infection (e.g., redness, swelling, pus)
• Trouble with speech, eating, or swallowing
