Tongue Ties
What Is the Lingual Frenum?
What Is a Tongue-Tie?
How Does It Affect Us?
The lingual frenum is a thin stretch of tissue located underneath the tongue, connecting it to the floor of the mouth. While it plays a role in guiding tongue movement, its tightness or position can sometimes interfere with oral function.
Tongue-tie, or ankyloglossia, refers to a condition where the tissue under the tongue is too short, thick, or stiff. This restricts how freely the tongue can move, which can lead to challenges with feeding, speech, or other oral functions — in both children and adults.
A restricted tongue can impact everyday functions like:
-
Creating an effective latch during breastfeeding
-
Forming certain speech sounds clearly
-
Properly swallowing and managing food
-
Maintaining oral hygiene and long-term dental health
Identifying and treating tongue-ties early can support healthier feeding, clearer speech, and improved comfort for people of all ages.

Understanding the Impact of Oral Restrictions
We understand that oral restrictions — including tongue ties, lip ties, and buccal ties — can affect people in different ways at different stages of life. In infants, they may interfere with feeding. In older children and adults, they can contribute to issues with speech, sleep, jaw tension, and oral function.
Because symptoms can vary widely, it’s not always easy to recognize when a restriction is the root cause. That’s why we believe in taking a thoughtful, collaborative approach. We partner with trusted professionals — including lactation consultants, speech-language pathologists, feeding and myofunctional therapists, and other healthcare specialists — to ensure each patient receives care tailored to their unique needs.
At Peninsula Tongue Tie, we’re here to listen, guide you through the evaluation process, and support your family with compassionate, evidence-based treatment at every age and stage.

Feeding Difficulties
Infants may struggle with breastfeeding or bottle-feeding, leading to poor latch, gas, reflux, and fussiness.

Speech and Swallowing
Restricted tongue and lip movement can affect speech clarity, pronunciation, and swallowing.

Sleep Disruptions
Restricted tongue movement can lead to mouth breathing, snoring, and an increased risk of sleep-disordered breathing, affecting overall sleep quality and development.
