How to Know if Your Baby May Have a Tongue Tie

Feeding difficulties, painful nursing, clicking sounds, and poor latch may sometimes be related to oral restrictions such as tongue tie or lip tie.

Some babies struggle with latch, make clicking sounds while feeding, tire easily, or seem frustrated during nursing. Mothers may also experience significant pain, prolonged feeding sessions, or concerns about milk transfer and weight gain.
In some cases, these challenges may be related to oral restrictions such as a tongue tie or lip tie.
At Peninsula Tongue Tie, we work closely with families and healthcare providers throughout the Bay Area to evaluate infants, children, and adults for tongue and lip tie concerns using a compassionate, function-focused approach.
What Is a Tongue Tie?
A tongue tie (also called ankyloglossia) occurs when the tissue connecting the tongue to the floor of the mouth restricts normal tongue movement.
Some tongue ties are very obvious, while others can be difficult to recognize without a functional evaluation.
Not every tongue tie requires treatment, and not every feeding issue is caused by a tongue tie. A careful assessment is important to determine whether oral restrictions may be contributing to symptoms.
Common Signs in Infants
Some possible signs that may warrant an evaluation include:
Difficulty latching
Clicking sounds during feeding
Painful breastfeeding
Prolonged feeding sessions
Frequent unlatching
Poor milk transfer
Gassiness or excessive air intake
Milk leaking during feeds
Frustration while feeding
Slow weight gain
Maternal nipple pain or damage
These symptoms can have many possible causes, which is why collaboration with lactation consultants, pediatricians, feeding specialists, and other healthcare providers is often important.
A Team-Based Approach
At Peninsula Tongue Tie, we believe tongue tie care works best when families are supported by a collaborative team.
Depending on each child’s needs, this may include:
lactation consultants
pediatricians
speech therapists
feeding therapists
airway-focused providers
bodyworkers or physical therapists
Our goal is not simply to identify a tongue tie, but to evaluate oral function and help families make informed decisions about care.
Does Every Tongue Tie Need Treatment?
No.
Some tongue ties cause minimal functional concerns and may not require intervention. Others may significantly affect feeding, speech, oral function, or comfort.
When treatment is recommended, we use advanced CO₂ laser technology designed for precision and comfort. We also emphasize education, aftercare support, and functional follow-up.
When Should Parents Seek an Evaluation?
If feeding is painful, stressful, or not improving despite support, it may be helpful to schedule an evaluation.
Early assessment can help families better understand what may be contributing to feeding difficulties and what options are available.
